This is a small group session that focuses on science concepts for students in 5th grade. This session is led by a highly qualified teacher that interacts with the students online. Our small groups for this course are typically around 5-10 students. We use a parent survey to answer questions about their child and their learning needs as well as how they learn best. This allows us to group students in a session appropriately. Sessions are 60 minutes in length and meet once a week.
These sessions are personalized for your child’s learning. The are specially designed to be purposeful and focused instruction that allows your child the ability to interact and learn directly with a live teacher, but without sitting for hours at a time on the computer. Each instructor tailors and provides students with structured work off-screen which allows them to develop their independence apply their knowledge in meaningful way. This goal is to promote positive and continuous learning outcomes that build confidence and success for each child.
If they ever have a question, we offer active support from a certified teacher for students enrolled in this course 5 days a week during 9am-7pm EST .
Concepts taught can include, but are not limited to:
Structure and Properties of Matter
Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.
Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.
Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems
Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
Earth’s Systems
Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
Describe and graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth
Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
Space Systems: Stars and the Solar System
Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.
Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.
Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
Engineering Design
Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.
